I want to give a special thank you to all my ancestors who fought in the American Revolution and Civil War. Another thank you to my Uncles Jim and Bill and my Father in Law for serving during World War II, my uncles Luther, Ernest, Sam and Jimmy for serving in peacetime, my cousin Gwyn and schoolmate WC for serving in Vietnam, my cousins who served in Afghanistan, and all the many others who have served and fought that we might have the freedoms we cherish today.
This sampler, I designed 4 years ago, say it all, Faith--Liberty--Freedom--Family--Country.

I am working on another piece, which will be a limited edition pillow kit that honors our tradition of Liberty. I hope to have it finished and released by the 1st of July.

It has been a good week here at Cherished Stitches. The goodies I ordered at TNNA market have started arriving.
Two new books.

And then Friday I received my silk gimp fibers from Trish for my Cabinet of Curiosities. I had stopped stitching on the little mini box top, while waiting for them to arrive. Now I can't wait to attempt working with them. I love working with something new.

We had our annual Fowler family reunion on Saturday. It is always a happy day when I get to see and talk to family members I only see once in a while.

Yesterday we grilled burgers on the grill and ate out on the deck with my son and his girlfriend. It was such a beautiful day. So nice in fact, that Bob and I decided to grill pork chops and eat outside for dinner also.

Also new this week, I have 2 tomatoes on my plant. I really hope they don't get stolen by birds or chipmunks.

With today being a Monday, I guess it is time to go do more Laudry. I don't have to worry about lunch, because my cousin sent home a huge plate of pulled pork, and Bob has Lions tonight, so dinner will be a sandwich all alone. (That is a good thing, no cooking)

Hope you all have a very blessed Memorial Day.

After reading through several blogs, it appears I have a lot to live up to in order to get those followers. I am told I need lots of photos to make my blog interesting. As some of you know, and many of do not know, I was a professional photographer for over 20 years. I still do occasional work in the studio, but have found that I developed a serious aversion to taking photos, once I left the studio. So, now I must push myself sometimes to even take a camera with me when traveling, whether for Cherished Stitches or for vacation. I really do like that most of the time I can use my phone and ipad for quick snapshots, when I remember to pull them out. So, my goals are to take more pictures and make a better blog.

I really wanted to go to the Penn Dry Goods event this weekend, as I so enjoyed the event last year. But, I have been on the road quite a bit this year. I just read the Tot Hill Farm blog, and I am so jealous. Chris has always made a trip into an adventure. I just love the way she always comes up with such interesting places to eat. Really looking forward to our trip to Nashville 2015 next year.

One of the things I have been working on this past week, is a class to teach at Nashville 2015. I hope this is of interest to the shops, as it is something I have been wanting to work on for some time. As an artist, (yes, one of my jobs in our studio was to do hand tinting, and full oils of portraits), I just cannot resist anything to do with paints. For the first part of the class, I plan to teach how to distress paint a box.

The Finished product.

The second part of the class will be a design to fit on top. I was very excited about working on the Jamestown jacket with simple Blackwork stitches, and plan to work up the top with this style of needlework. I have always loved the simplicity of Blackwork, and after stitching some of the smalls for my Cabinet of Curiosities and working on the jacket, love it even more.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.
I have started posting on Facebook, and although I say I will be more active on my blog, only time will tell.

Yesterday I posted a picture of the small neck roll I stitched and made up for my cousin, Donna, who is fighting breast cancer. I said I would post the chart as a freebie today if I could. All directions should be on the post.

I hope you enjoy this. Send me a photo of the finished piece, and what you did with it and who you stitched
Darlene Lara, owner and designer with The Marking Sampler, was in Greensboro, and we had 2 beautiful Carolina Spring days.

On Friday we started with a tour of the Greensboro Museum. It is the home of Dolly Madison's red velvet dress. The dress has just returned home after many years at the Smithstonean. It will only be on display for a short while, before it goes into storage, maybe forever. Also, some other pieces of her belongings were out. All of the objects were found in a trunk several years ago. The photo below is one of the motifs from a silk tablecloth. There was a water stain in the center where Dolly had turned over a vase of flowers. I found the workmanship very beautiful, even though it was probably a professionaly made piece. These motifs were couched or appliqued to the gold silk, and it was very hard to see any stitches.

After lunch, we spent the rest of the day antique shopping. Sad to say, we did not find anything to tempt our money from our wallets. Maybe that was a good thing.

Bright and early Saturday morning, we headed ot to Salisbury, NC, with the Piedmont Sampler Guild. Fifteen of us began our day shopping at Spring Robin. What could be better than a Needlework shop. Robin, the owner, had invited Threads of Gold to hold a trunk show. So, in addition to shopping, we got to view some wonderful antique sampler.

Lunch was at a great sandwich shop downtown. After a short walk, we enjoyed sitting outside in the beautiful weather, while eating our sandwiches.

After lunch, we walked another coulple of blocks to the Dr Josephus Hall House. What a beautiful place. The home had been built in 1820 as a girls school. Dr Hall and his wife bought it and refurbished it in 1859. It remained in the family until it was donated to the Salisbury Historicl Foundation. You can visit www.historicsalisbury.org, to find out about upcoming events at the house.

After touring the house, Darlene, my daugher Robin, and I headed out to find an antique shop we had been told about. Sadly, it had closed. But, we had another unexpected treat in store. The shop had been located in Spencer, just down the road from Salisbury. The NC Transportation Museum is located there. They were having a big steam train event, and we got to see the old steam engine go by.

This wonderful blog was shared by a friend. My Fairest Flowers series is based on Elizabethan gardens, and I really thought this article was inspiring. The Elizabethans were very proud of their gardens, and they put them on their clothing and into their homes with needle and thread. You can find the article here:
I had planned to stitch after posting. So, you know who had to move. As for the blogging, I continue to have issues. Like trying to get a consistant alignment, and trying to make paragraphs. If I hit the enter key, it goes all the way to the bottom of the page. It also took over an hour to figure out why my photos were not coming through from the new ipad to my e-mail. Turns out my password was not entered, even though I had put it in yesterday.

I was so excited yesterday. My new fabric samples from Wichelt came in. Now to decide which one to use for Autumn Whimsies. The colors shown do not do them justice. I worked with them a bit, but still they are not quite correct. They have a bit more yellow than shows.

I have been debating about buying a new phone, or upgrading my iPad. The iPad won out. Much easier to carry around, and now, hopefully, much easier for me to update my blog.

My son is being a sweet, and helping me with this. Now to get on to some current news.

I have been busy since Nashville. I have the fifth Fairest flowers stitched, my Christmas ornament for JCS finished, ready to mail. I am currently working on the limited release piece for this Fall. Some of the decisions I have to make, threads, lining fabric, and the linen color. Some linen choices on their way from Wichelt, and the threads and lining are shown in this photo.

See you soon.
First the stress of what to make, then after that, the desiging process, stitching the piece, or getting my daughter to stitch it for me. Then, if necessary, assembly, and finally, kitting it all up. In the final days before leaving, packing, and checking the list twice, to see if I have left anything out. It seems I always leave something home.

Arrival, after the 8 hour drive is just the beginning of an exciting weekend. Seeing all the other vendors, catching up from the last show, unpacking and setting up, selling, talking and talking and talkng, learning, and seeing all the new products keep me busy for 3 days. Then it is the down side of repacking, and the 8 hour drive home, that seems to take forever.

And then it starts all over again. So, I am brimming with ideas for the next show, which is in Aug, in St Charles.

In my last post, I talked about the monthly flower series. I took 4 to Nashille, Jan, Feb, March, and April, Borage, Passionflower, Pansy, and Iris. My "Fairest Flower" garden is growing. I have all the images on my web site.

One of my limited kits for Nashville was "Rites of Spring". A courting couple, tulips, a bunny, and other spring motifs were stitched on 32 ct linen. The kit included everything, but the stuffing.

Will do my best to post more often. Now, I want to play with the new linens and the new thread colors released Weeks, Creasent, The Gentle Art. Have a great day.

The flu during December has put me a couple of weeks behind and I have to catch up. Nashville market is only 2 months away, and although I can sort of plan in my head, I just am not the type of person who can stitch Spring models in December.

One of my plans for 2013 is a series, that can be stitched individually, or all together to create a large sampler. Like the Feathered Friends series last year, I will put out one small design each month, only this time, they will be deigned to all fit together, should you wish.

I will stitch mine on one piece of linen. At this time, the colors of the linen and the threads have not been chosen. My theme this year is flowers, but not just any flowers. After a lot of research, I have chosen flowers found in an Elizabethan Garden of the 1600's. It has been so interesting reading about the different flowers, and what they did with them besides displaying them. I am attaching some photos of a couple of classics, and one not so well known. The Borage is really a pretty flower. There are some pretty examples on the Plymouth Jacket.

It appears that I cannot get these photos to go where I want them.

They move every time I try to type.

Did you ever wonder why a carnation is called a Pink. It is not the color, but rather the pinked edges.

I love the scent of an antique rose. We have a bush at my son's house, our old house, that only blooms once a year and smells soooooo good.

Have a great week. Louise
I had not been to NYC since I was a senior in high school, and had lots I wanted to see. Road trips with my girls are always fun and hectic.

Robin and I are taking the on-line class Cabinet of Curiosities from Thistle Threads.
A group of the New England ladies arranged a behind the scenes tour of some of the 17th ctry needlework pieces at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. That was the reason for our trip. Angela just went along for the ride.

As plans progressed, we decided to go see the Rockettes, visit Times Square at night, and finally, a visit to a ventage store called Tinsel Trading.

I quickly found out that it was exhausting for me. I had little sleep before we left, and little while I was there. To me, NYC is a place for the young. So many people. But I would visit again at Christmas.

I really enjoyed the Rockettes, and seeing the sights when I was'nt underground in a subway or train station, or rushing to get to the next place on time. The Met exhibits were wonderful. I could have spent all day there. I love museums.

Tinsel Trading is the shop for stitchers, designers, and scrapbookers. Floor to ceiling, row after row of ribbons and trims. Crammed packed with hidden drawers of goodies, almost all of it vintage, and a lot of it from France. I should have known from the front window it would be a treasure hunt. The display was a huge cabinet, with al kinds of goodies falling from the drawers. The title: Cabinet of Curiosities was only the beginning. I have included a photo of some of the goodies I bought for finishing projects.

It has been a long day, but I think we are finally getting everything wrapped
up for the Baltimore market. Slight issue with the printer running out of yellow
ink, but it is supposed to arrive tomorrow. Just don't know what I would do
without hubby, who does all the printing, most of the bagging of patterns, and
sets up most computer related stuff. Then there is my daughter who does model
stitching for me, and lets me know what she thinks about designs and promos. And
my other daughter who helps me do up kits, and also gives many ideas about
marketing. And this year, my daughter-in-law even helped me make up the kits for
Ghoulish Treats.
I love Halloween, and have many memories of decorating when my children were
home. I don't do as much anymore, but have a lovely Halloween village that fills
up a huge amount of space in the den, that we set up. This year for the Fall
market, I really spent most of my time working on designs for the Halloween
season. Enter if You Dare, and The Undertaker along with the Ghoulish Treat Pin
Keep, are set to decorate my house when the market is over. Of course, I have to
fight all three girls to keep the pieces.

It has taken me an hour to get this posted. I have called Robin at least 5 times, trying to figure out why I could not put up photos, and why they would not go where I wanted them. But, maybe next time, I will not have to bother her so much. I can no longer use my Internet Express, but must use Safari. That was the first problem. The other was not leaving enough space between the paragraphs. Never too old to learn, just have to retain what I think I learned. Good night!Louisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10676439063815955716noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8081591759735548102.post-55146675681685023912012-08-11T08:29:00.001-07:002012-08-11T08:29:32.517-07:00Getting the Hang of ThisTo me, blogging is frustrating. Security, photos, and then the writing. I can talk a mile a minute, but writing is a different story.
We are at our Piedmont Heritage Sampler Guild meeting. Friends are trying to help me renew my blogging. We shall see how it works out.
So many wonderful suggestions. I am currently working on my Feathered Friends collection. Currently, September is slowly taking shape. I chose the peacock, as I wanted some blues, and it is my birthday month. So, it has to be special.
Have a great day.Louisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10676439063815955716noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8081591759735548102.post-20644216466999882862011-03-12T09:20:00.000-08:002011-03-12T09:44:06.284-08:00This sketch is a simple rendition of the little slipper I saw in Godeys magazine.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqPyvnGkGQfbML8yeRBNhsS27aCSz2O01I0wfotbFs0ZlO59gFLML8uSAwA8z6tVrqg_duzB_YDtnbCm4idLFYlsCl1CfNS4tUbS9X60Fyp_mSqPvR0iEksDc2VjY0e8fp0yJxUCpPuTWY/s320/IMG_2675+sketch+of+slipper.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583245123157904354" />
And this is what I came up with. I dyed silk ribbon to match. Who ever knew there were so many shades of red? This is one of the pieces I will be teaching at Celebration. I am so excited about finally getting the little shoe as I envisioned it. I wanted it sparkly, since the Ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz were my inspiration for color. For a simpler design on the toe, I chose an adaptation from a 16th Century lace pattern book. I love going to these old copies, and working up a design to stitch.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieRy01R2mxhyphenhyphencXWqCeTuBVUlTGdyhU7yjpmXf47w41yMW9k4F_d4H0lvPv4JS7-oaHwUMWRqM809TJpw1jPoz4bPCrFfjRwQM3iIRjKQPar7aD2Pcn5gkhS0I-yz7K7ooWUjYaZ60nEpSM/s320/IMG_2661+robins+photo+of+shoe.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583246708887938386" />Louisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10676439063815955716noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8081591759735548102.post-36175359816305512252011-03-10T16:45:00.000-08:002011-03-10T16:51:54.362-08:00No help from the elvesI have spent the last 4 days working on the Ruby Slipper. Although I spent most of the night constructing the shoe in my head, when I got up this morning, I found that the elves had not come during the night to finish it for me. All I got was the old shoe last. Guess I better go sew the sole to the upper shoe.

Louisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10676439063815955716noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8081591759735548102.post-54249926215539060582011-03-07T16:17:00.000-08:002011-03-07T16:29:22.042-08:00Peaceful DayHubby left early, early this morning for the North Carolina Professional Photographers Convention, so it has really been quite here. Just the kitties to talk with.

I worked on the templates for the Ruby Slipper this morning, and then worked on the design. I can't wait to get this piece finished. I have seen so many different slippers, but have not actually seen one quite like I am hoping this one will be when finished. It is based on a drawing from Godeys Ladies Book.

I love those books, and wish I had all of them. I enjoy reading all of the stories, the bad and dismal poetry, and looking at all of the needlework and sewing projects. The hand colored fashion plates are so pretty.

Must get back to stitching now.Louisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10676439063815955716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8081591759735548102.post-45143065406373596252011-03-06T13:24:00.001-08:002011-03-06T13:55:56.928-08:00A new teaching piece... finished!I have been extremely busy since Nashville, finishing the models for Celebration of Needlework. Last night at 10:00pm, the photo of Lucy's Pocket was posted on my website. After several re-starts, I finally finished it! Monday I start on the Ruby Slipper. I designed this pocket based on several antique pieces I have seen. When it came to naming it, I chose my nickname, Lucy. But, I also love the poem, Lucy Locket who lost her pocket. When researching the poem, I was very interested to discover some of the possbile interpretations of the poem. Here is the photo I posted:

My daughter is here trying to help me figure out how to set up my blog, and keep it more active. So far, we have lost the background. We are hoping hubby can help find it again, and that it does not wind up like Lucy's Pocket, with not a thing in it. I am going to try to be a little more consistent in my postings.Til next time.Louisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10676439063815955716noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8081591759735548102.post-55991236002147996012011-02-19T06:37:00.000-08:002011-02-19T06:38:33.389-08:00TNNA Market - NashvilleReady for the shops to visit us at the Nashville TNNA Needlework Market! Also working on a couple of new designs for February release!Louisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10676439063815955716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8081591759735548102.post-82287477875414132222010-05-24T16:07:00.000-07:002010-05-24T16:12:00.785-07:00Today I have stitched on the Seventeenth Century Mystery Sampler. It is coming along nicely. I cannot wait to finish it.
I received the threads from Gentle Arts today, so tomorrow, I want to start the piece for JCS. I cannot wait to get started.
I also cannot wait to get time to work on the new piece for this fall. Having 3 pieces going at once is a bit unusual for me. I have lots of unfinished projects, but to actually be alternating the pieces because I really want to finish them all is a of a change for me. I usually finish a design before I start a new one. But with the mystery sampler, I cannot get more than one lesson ahead of the group.
Enough, back to Harry Potter, and the mystery sampler.Louisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10676439063815955716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8081591759735548102.post-65121784371452861242010-05-20T08:43:00.001-07:002010-05-20T08:50:15.971-07:00I am told I have to be a little more frequent in my postings. I have been busy at this and that. I finished teaching at Celebration, and drove straight home from Nashua, NH. Only 13-1/2 hours. I was so tired when I finally got home. I am not sure I have recuperated yet or not.

I have been busy since my return working on designs for this Fall and for our Mystery EGA Seventeen Band sampler. I have presented the 3rd band, and sent a photo of finished band. I began the 4th band, and it was included in the photo. I am now waiting on more threads from Access Commodities before I do anymore work on Band 4.

I have designed a piece for Just Cross Stitch or Sampler and Antique Quarterly. I am looking forward to this one, because I will be trying out the new wool threads from The Gentle Art.

I have also worked up a special piece that both my daughter and I are stitching. She is stitching on black linen with overdyed threads, and I am stitching on Flax linen with overdyed silk threads. This is a special piece, and I hope to release it this October.Louisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10676439063815955716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8081591759735548102.post-24121656959048594552010-03-15T15:45:00.000-07:002010-03-15T16:01:27.713-07:00Getting the Hang of BloggingI have not posted since Nashville. I left straight for Williamsburg, where I attended Jeanine's Gathering. I had a good time visiting with friends I see too infrequently.

I have also had to deal with a computer crash.

Since returning home, I have been busy working on a new release for the on-line show, and a 17th century style sampler for my EGA group. We are all so excited about this project. The hard part is only stitching 1 band at a time. I usually like to do the beginning of every band, then come back and fill it all in. I also have a hard time not doing the entire design at once, which I do admit, I almost have completed. I will pick most of the stitches as I go, however.

Today I met with a group from my EGA, and we worked on our basket for Stitching on the Ridge. Picking all of the fabrics, threads and designs for this project was an enjoyable way to spend the morning.

In the afternoon, I took my serger to have new needles put in, as one had broken. It worked fine at the shop, but alas, when I tried to use it at home, it was not the same. So, I have to make another trip to the sewing machine shop.

How was that Duke game? Good or what. I must say, Georgia Tech had me worried a bit. I love to watch, but boy do I get tense. The next coupla weeks will be interesting. Cannot believe Carolina got into the NIT game, and some of the other ACC teams who had better seasons did not. In case you cannot tell, I am a Duke or a Wake Forest Fan.

LouiseLouisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10676439063815955716noreply@blogger.com1
